Our Pet-Friendly Stay at Kimpton Shorebreak Resort in Huntington Beach

If you’re looking for a pet-friendly place to stay near Huntington Beach, I highly recommend the Kimpton Shorebreak Resort. It’s the perfect spot for anyone traveling with their dog, and the location is just across the street from the beach—making it super convenient for those long walks on the sand. I stayed here with my two English Springer Spaniels, Captain and Zooey, for a night, and it was the perfect getaway. Here’s what our experience was like!
First Impressions.

This wasn’t my first time visiting the Kimpton Shorebreak Resort—I had actually had brunch here about a year and a half ago with my friend Crystal. But this was my first time staying overnight, so I was excited to see what the full experience would be like.
Upon arrival, I found parking to be a bit confusing. There were two options: self-parking or valet. I initially opted for self-parking because I prefer it, but after chatting with the valet attendant, I learned that the self-parking garage wasn’t actually owned by the hotel, so each time I left, I’d have to pay a fee. The valet staff was super helpful, though, and they switched me over to valet parking without charging me the additional fee.
Once the parking situation was sorted, we went upstairs to check-in. We arrived a couple of hours early, but they were able to check us in ahead of time. Even better, we got upgraded to a oceanfront view room, which was such a great surprise. I was thrilled since I was eager to get to our room and head straight to the beach!
The staff at Kimpton Shorebreak Resort were amazing with my dogs. They showered Captain and Zooey with attention, and one of the employees even asked if she could take a Polaroid of the pups to display on their dog guest bulletin board near the front desk. It was such a sweet touch, and it made me feel really welcome.
The Location: Perfect for Beach Lovers

The hotel’s location is ideal. Not only is it just across the street from Huntington Beach, but it’s also walking distance to so many fantastic restaurants and attractions. We were there on a Tuesday, and just a few blocks away was the Tuesday night Farmer’s Market, which had tons of delicious food options.
For anyone visiting with their dog, the off-leash dog area at the beach is just a couple of miles away, so everything we wanted to do was within easy walking distance.
The Room: Comfortable and Spacious

I had booked a Deluxe King Room using my IHG points, but thanks to the upgrade, we ended up staying in a King Premium Oceanfront View room (415 square feet). This was such a pleasant surprise! The extra space was great for the pups, and the view of the ocean was stunning.
The room had a king-size bed facing the window, and it was really comfortable, with lots of pillows. There weren’t any dog beds in the room, so I called down to the front desk, and they promptly brought up two beds for Captain and Zooey. There were also no dog bowls, but I always travel with my own dog bowls, so that wasn’t a problem.
I really liked the work area in the room, which had a writing desk that also faced the window. My husband needed a spot for a Zoom meeting, and the WiFi worked great for him. There were also USB outlets on the nightstand and a sound machine, which was a nice touch for relaxation.
Amenities: Comfort and Convenience

The room was well-equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. There was a flat-screen TV, a mini refrigerator, a dresser, Italian Frette bathrobes, and even a record player (how cool is that?). If you’re into music, you can grab some records from the lobby to play during your stay.
The bathroom was spacious, with plenty of counter space for our toiletries. I loved that there was an oversized tub—I was able to unwind with a hot bath before heading to bed. The bath salts were a nice touch, and they had plenty of towels as well.
However, one small issue was the shower. It barely had any water flowing out of it, which made showering a bit of a hassle. I think the showerhead might have been malfunctioning, but it wasn’t enough of an issue for me to request a room change since I was already settled in.
The toiletries were minimal but nice, including a small bottle of lotion and soap, along with refillable liquid body soap, shampoo, and conditioner. The products smelled lovely, even if I didn’t recognize the brand.
Pet-Friendliness

Kimpton is famous for being pet-friendly, and they didn’t disappoint. There was no pet fee, and they don’t have a size or weight limit for dogs, which is fantastic. The hotel didn’t have a dedicated pet relief area, but there were plenty of places nearby to walk the dogs.
They also had a special dog menu at the hotel’s Pacific Hideaway restaurant, so I ordered a chicken, rice, and carrot entrée for the pups. The staff was so thoughtful—they split the dish into two separate bowls so they didn’t have to share. The portion was huge, and for just $7, it was well worth the wait!
On-Site Amenities: For Both Humans and Dogs

- Beach Gear: Since the beach is just across the street, the hotel provides beach chairs, umbrellas, boogie boards, and even coolers—perfect for a day at the beach.
- Nightly S’mores Kits: If you’re a fan of s’mores, you’ll love the fire pits on the lobby level, where you can make s’mores while enjoying the beach vibe.
- Fitness Center: The fitness center is spacious and has a unique 40-foot climbing wall, along with Peloton bikes and other fitness equipment. There’s even a surfboard locker for anyone planning to hit the waves.
- Pacific Hideaway: For dinner, we enjoyed a meal at Pacific Hideaway, where we sat on the outdoor patio with the pups. The tacos were delicious (the shrimp tacos were my favorite!), and they even had a special dog menu.
Final Thoughts
Overall, our stay at Kimpton Shorebreak Resort was amazing. The service was top-notch, and the staff went out of their way to make sure Captain and Zooey were comfortable. While the shower was a minor issue, everything else was perfect. The location, the amenities, and the pet-friendly atmosphere made it a fantastic choice for our beach getaway. We can’t wait to return!
